Back to School: Embracing a Healthy Routine

As September rolls around, the excitement of returning to university fills the air. Whether you’re a new student or returning for another year, a new list of classes, back-to-school events, and possibly a new city can feel overwhelming. I remember how exhilarating it was to dive into a new routine, only to realize that as the course load piled up, it became all too easy to lose focus on my well-being. Here’s what I learned about maintaining a healthy routine during my university years. I hope these insights help you navigate your school year and keep your well-being in check!

Finding Balance: My Journey - Coach Erica

Community Matters
In my first year, I was fortunate to live with my family, which made a huge difference. We would cook dinner and do homework together. This sense of community not only provided emotional support but also kept me accountable for my studies and health. If you’re moving away from home, seek out friends, join campus groups, or find a CrossFit gym! Building a support network can make university life less isolating and more enjoyable.

Prioritizing Sleep
I learned the hard way that sacrificing sleep for studying is a slippery slope. During my second and third years, I often found myself cramming in the library, convinced that more study hours would lead to better grades. Instead, I ended up exhausted and unfocused. Prioritizing sleep became a game-changer for my health and my grades. Aim for 7-9 hours of quality sleep each night. It’s amazing how much more productive and clear-headed you’ll feel after a good night’s rest.

Fueling Your Body (And Mind!)
Nutrition can easily fall by the wayside when you’re juggling classes and assignments. I remember days when I skipped meals or relied on snacks because I thought I didn’t have time to cook. However, I quickly realized that fueling with nutritious foods was essential for maintaining energy and focus. Try meal prepping on weekends or keep healthy snacks on hand. A balanced diet not only supports your physical health but also enhances your cognitive function for those study hours!

Staying Active
Incorporating movement into my routine was another important lesson. During my first year, I occasionally joined my sister for early morning gym sessions, and it made a significant difference in my mood and energy levels. Four years later she was the one who got me back into a regular fitness routine, which made me a more productive Master’s student and a happier, healthier individual. Whether it’s a brisk walk between studying, a morning CrossFit class, or a run at the end of your day, find an activity that you enjoy. It’s a fantastic way to relieve stress and boost your overall well-being.

Tips for a Successful University Experience

1. Set Realistic Goals: Break your academic tasks into manageable goals. This approach not only makes studying less daunting but also gives you a sense of accomplishment as you check things off your to-do list.

2. Stay Organized: Use a planner or digital calendar to keep track of assignments, deadlines, and social events. Staying organized can help you feel more in control of your schedule and reduce anxiety. My personal favorites are to either use my agenda or the BusyCal app on my laptop!

3. Take Breaks: Don’t forget to take regular breaks while studying. Step outside for some fresh air, stretch, or grab a coffee with a friend. Use it as a reward if you have to! Example: I will focus on studying for 30 minutes and then I will… These quick breaks can recharge your mind and enhance your productivity.

4. Reflect and Adjust: Take time to reflect on what is working and what isn’t in your routine. What is good for you, what isn’t good for you, and what is missing that you might need? It’s okay to make adjustments as you go. Flexibility is key to finding a balance that suits your unique lifestyle.

By embracing these strategies, you can create a healthy routine that supports your academic success and personal happiness. University is not just about hitting the books, it’s also about growth. So take care of yourself, build connections, and enjoy this journey!
