“How CrossFit made me a happier, healthier, and better student.”

- Coach Syd

Transitioning to university life is both thrilling and demanding. With fewer rules, less guidance, and greater freedom comes increased responsibility. So, how do we navigate this transition and thrive in our new environment? The answer lies in establishing a routine, taking care of our physical and mental health, and seeking support. CrossFit played a pivotal role in helping me achieve these goals during my university years. Without CrossFit I might not have made it through 8 years post-secondary and to where I am today.

1. CrossFit Provides Structure and Routine

One of the biggest challenges of the student life is the absence of a structured daily schedule. In high school, our days were meticulously planned, but in university, we're expected to manage our time independently. This newfound freedom can be overwhelming, leading to procrastination and inefficiency. CrossFit introduced an essential element of structure into my life.

By committing to regular CrossFit classes, I established a consistent routine. This routine not only helped me manage my time more effectively but also gave me a sense of purpose. Whether it was an early morning session or an evening workout, CrossFit became a cornerstone of my daily life. This regularity spilled over into my academic endeavors, making me more disciplined and organized in my studies.

2. CrossFit Boosts Physical and Mental Health

The transition to college can be physically and mentally taxing. The stress of coursework, exams, and the pressure to succeed can take a toll on our well-being. CrossFit proved to be a game-changer in this regard. There is a growing body of literature that recognizes the positive effects of exercise on mood states such as anxiety, stress and depression. In highschool we often participate in sports or regular physical activity through gym class. In university it can be easy to let the workload and lack of routine get in the way of consistent exercise. Lack of consistent physical activity has a negative impact on our physical and mental well-being.

CrossFit not only kept me physically fit but also provided a healthy outlet for stress and anxiety. I felt more energized, focused, and better equipped to tackle the academic challenges. Moreover, CrossFit is a community-driven activity. The camaraderie and support from fellow members created a positive and motivating environment. These connections extended beyond the gym and provided a strong social support system, contributing significantly to my overall mental well-being.

3. CrossFit: A New Support System

In high school, our support system often consists of long-time friends, sports teams, drama clubs, and our family. However, when we transition to college, we lose some of these familiar pillars of support. While we'll undoubtedly forge new connections through colleagues, clubs, and recreational teams, CrossFit can also become an integral part of our new support system.

The CrossFit community is diverse and welcoming. Whether you're a seasoned athlete or a beginner, you'll find encouragement and support from coaches and fellow members. This sense of belonging can be incredibly comforting during the sometimes isolating experience of student life.

In conclusion, CrossFit played a vital role in making my university years happier, healthier, and more successful. It introduced structure and routine into my daily life, improved my physical and mental health, and provided a supportive community. So, if you're embarking on this journey, consider giving CrossFit a try – it might just be the missing piece that helps you thrive in this exciting new chapter of your life.

Sincerely,
Coach Syd
