Starting that first run…

This one is for the people who say "I think I’ll cancel” whenever they see running intervals in our weekly programming. It can be intimidating and difficult to show up for activities that we do not enjoy or particularly excel at. We often decide before we even show up to the gym that we won't enjoy it. We don't give ourselves the chance to try to enjoy it. Of course, when we skip out on these activities we don't get the practice time to make improvements.

This brings me to my first point, don’t overthink it! So many people get it in their own head that they don’t enjoy running or they aren't good at it. Whenever there is a running workout on the agenda, don’t think about it, just go. There’s no need for expectations, you just need to show up and move! Our coaches are awesome when it comes to scaling back a workout to help you develop the skill of running and feel accomplished after.

If you’re new to running or getting back into it, you might wonder, “What pace should I run at?” If you have a watch or phone to help track your running times, consider leaving it at home for your first few runs. When starting out, focus on running at a pace that is easy for you. Remember, this pace is going to be different for everyone. If you're always pushing yourself too hard or too fast you are never going to enjoy running.

Another common question is “How far should my first run be?” That is a question that can only be answered by you. Whether it's 1km, 5km, or 10km, aim to run until you start to feel good and then stop. End that run on a high note and stop before you need to. Finishing your first run feeling accomplished will start a positive feedback loop and help you go out for that second and third run. Set yourself up to be encouraged instead of discouraged. You completed your first run! Your time, distance, and pace do not matter. All that matters is that you started and you are better than you were yesterday.

If you’re feeling uncertain, reflect on your own goals and consider starting with a friend (or York County Run Club). Remember, you don’t have to be fast or fit to enjoy running - just take that first step. Coach Spencer
